Asa Lee (Bud) Hicks

Asa Lee (Bud) Hicks, age 91, Martin, SD, passed away March 6, 2018 at the Bennett County Hospital in Martin.
 
Bud was born June 29, 1926, to Asa and Julia Steele Hicks in a sod house northeast of Martin. As a young boy, he lived in the Patricia area as his parents operated the store and farmed. When his parents sold the Patricia store, they moved to Martin where they purchased a creamery. They eventually purchased the home place where Bud lived until his death. 
 
During his youth, he participated in 4-H and was involved with the family horse business providing bucking horses for area rodeos. He attended schools in Bennett County and graduated from high school in 1945. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served on the front line combat zone during the Korean War. Bud served as a past Post #240 Commander, was Post Legionnaire of the Year in 1970, and District Legionnaire of the Year in 1972. He also served on the ASCS board and the school board. He enjoyed watching sports, rodeos, and western movies.
 
He married Lynna Cummings July 19, 1957 in Rapid City. To this union, three children were born: Lee, Leona and Lyle. They lived on the home place farming and ranching their entire marriage. Lynna passed away Feb. 4, 2000.
 
Survivors include his children: Lee, Martin, Leona (Hal) Oberlander, New Underwood, and Lyle (Doreen), Indianapolis, Ind; his grandchildren,  Shawna (Ben) Hauser,Casper, Wyo., Jeremy Hicks, Martin; Mandi Hicks, Sheridan, Wyo., Melissa (Josh) Wiese, Oconto, Neb., Tyler Oberlander, Hershey, Neb., Keil Oberlander, Kapolei, Hawaii, Aaron (Megan Iverson) Oberlander, Sturgis; Justin Oberlander,  New Underwood and Sierra Oberlander, New Underwood; eight great grandchildren, Meleah, Colton, Tatam, Lynae, Cheyenne, Asa Bella, Aiden and Victor; sisters-in-law Doris Hicks, Luella Hicks and Elsie Bostock; brother-in-law Dane Cummings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
 
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Asa and Julia; his wife, Lynna; his grandson, Justin; brothers John, Nathan, Dale, Neil, Leonard and Melvin; sisters Edith, Amber and Ethel; sisters-in-law Connie Hicks, Janet Belle Hicks, Margaret Frost; brothers-in-law Quincy Louden, Clarence Cummings, and Melvin Cummings; mother-in-law Mary Belle Wallace; and father-in-law Frank Cummings.
 
Memorial services were March 12, at the new American Legion in Martin. 
 
Interment with military honors was held at the Martin Community Cemetery.
 
The family suggests memorials to the Bennett County Home Health Services and donations may be sent in care of Bennett County Funeral Service, P.O. Box 65, Martin, SD 57551.
