Darrel Peterson

November 19, 1949 - June 22, 2015

    Darrel Peterson, age 65, Philip, S.D., died Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a short battle with ALS.
     Darrel G. Peterson was born November 19, 1949, in Kadoka, the son of James E. and Lucile (Dean) Peterson. He grew up on a ranch east of Philip and attended Magnuson rural school. He attended Philip High School, graduating in 1969 and then attended Black Hills State College. He later joined his brothers and father on the ranch.
    He was united in marriage to Anita Paulsen on December 27, 1972, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall, and to this union were born five children, Dustin, Michael, Landon, Kelsie and Ashlee. They made their home at the ranch east of Philip all their married life.
    Darrel devoted his life to his children and to the ranch. Later in life, his best enjoyment was watching his children and grandchildren participate in all their activities. Darrel enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing, especially with his college buddy, Casey.
    Survivors include his wife, Anita, Philip; five children, Dustin Peterson and his wife, Carmen, Sioux Falls, Michael Peterson and his wife, Tanya, Philip, Landon Peterson, Philip, Kelsie Naescher and her husband, Darin, Philip, and Ashlee Peterson, Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Gary Peterson and his wife, Joel, Faith, and Roger Peterson and his wife, Kathy, Philip; one sister, Doreen Olson and her husband, Bob, Austin, Texas; his mother-in-law, Edith Paulsen, Wall; his brother-in-law, Kevin Paulsen and his wife, Terry, Las Vegas, Nev.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
    Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lucile Peterson; and his father-in-law, Raynold Paulsen.
    Services were held Monday, June 29, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Father Kevin Achbach officiating.
    Music was provided by Marianne Frein, pianist, and Josh Eggers, vocalist.
    Reader was Rita O’Connell. Ushers were Corbin Peterson, Paul Peterson and Dalton Sheridan.
    Pallbearers were Jerry Thompson, Casey Kebach, Marty Kroetch, Bud Eggers, Jim Mansfield, Ed Snyder, Tom Radway, Bob Coyle and Louis Dean.
    Honorary pallbearers were the Philip High School Class of 1969.
    Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
    A memorial has been established.
    Arrangements were with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
