She grew up on the family farm and attended the rural Cedar Township School until she graduated from eighth grade in Calhoun County, IA.  She then attended Lytton High School where she graduated from in 1952.
During some summers she would travel with her family to visit relatives in South Dakota and visit the Badlands, the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. While in western SD they would go to Faith to visit a special Aunt, Trena Hardyk.

Dorothy loved to garden and canned enough food for every winter.   She always made room for plenty of flowers to enjoy at home and added prairie flowers to take into church. She took walks to gather flowers and to enjoy God’s nature.
Mom loved spending time with us kids; taking church outings and vacations and later with the grandchildren at sports activities, trips in the Black Hills, Devils Tower and NWMSTR in Rollag, MN.
She was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she was very active in the Ladies WMF where she held several offices through the years.
