Earl D. Hammerstrom, age 89, Wall, S.D., died Thursday, August 6, 2015, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Earl D. Hammerstrom was born February 8, 1926, on a farm near Davis, the son of Lester T. and Flora G. (Marks) Hammerstrom. He attended country school nearby and attended Chancellor High School.
Earl entered the U.S. Army in April 1945 and was honorably discharged in October 1946, after which he helped his father on the farm.
On July 16, 1949, Earl was united in marriage to Mabel Murray in Chancellor and to this union were born two sons, Terry and Craig. In 1967, they moved to western South Dakota, and in 1987, retired from Estes Construction.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Hammerstrom, Wall; two sons, Terry Hammerstrom and his wife, Cheryl, New Underwood, and Craig Hammerstrom, Tooele, Utah; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene Hammerstrom and his wife, Velma, Harrisburg; a sister-in-law, Bernice Hammerstrom, Sioux Falls; a special friend of the couple, Pat Peters; and a special niece, Karol Patterson.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Irene Harms and Doris Vietor; and one brother, Dale Hammerstrom.
Memorial services were held Monday, August 10, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall, with Father Leo Hausmann officiating.
Military graveside rites wereheld Monday, August 10, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Arrangements were with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall.
