Gordon "Dale" Galbraith, age 80

Gordon "Dale" Galbraith

Dale was an avid horseman who left a lasting impression on hundreds of horse people, the accomplished as well as the aspiring cowboys, cowgirls and other horse enthusiasts. Dale passed peacefully at home on Nov. 20, 2016, at the age of 80 years.

Dale was born at home in Wall, S.D., on Oct. 19, 1936, to Thomas Wesley Galbraith and Wilhelmina May Peterson Galbraith, who later perished in a house fire when Dale was an infant.

He was raised by his grandmother, "Mina" Peterson, and spent countless hours at his family's "home" ranch, run by his aunt and uncle, Johnny and Harriet Peterson in Philip. In 1964, Dale and his family moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where he worked as a cowboy and later as a carpenter.

After retiring as a journeyman carpenter, Dale returned to his passion of horse training. He became a talented horseman admired by many in the horse community. His achievements and awards were extensive in team penning, sorting, team roping and ranch horse class. He was still practicing his craft until a few short years ago. Dale never hesitated to share his horse knowledge with others.

Dale is survived by his wife of 39 years, Joanne Graham Galbraith of Bakersfield, Calif. He is also survived by his eldest daughter, Susan Burdick and her husband, Larry, and their daughter, Charlin, all of Powell Butte, Ore.; his son, Mark Galbraith of Alaska and his youngest daughter, Karen Perry and her husband, Ray, and their children, David and Jason Smith, all of Lancaster, Calif.; his stepchildren, Curtis Harms and his wife, Marta, of Bakersfield, Johanna Ritter and her husband, Paul, of West Virginia, Robert Harms, Richard Harms and Belinda Harms, all of Bakersfield; plus six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

No immediate services will be held. A "Celebration of Life" is planned in the coming months. Information on services will be posted on www.Legacy.com and in the Bakersfield Californian prior to the date.
