James W. Haney

James W. “Jim” Haney, age 83, of Rapid City, formerly of Wall, died on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
James W. “Jim” Haney was born May 14, 1936, in Geddes, South Dakota, the only child born to James W. Haney, Sr. and Shirley (DeLong) Haney. He grew up in the Geddes area and received his education until his junior year of high school when he attended Pickstown High School, graduating in 1954. After graduation, he attended vo-tech school in Springfield, studying mechanics.
Jim enlisted in the Army National Guard and attended monthly drill in Wagner. He along with his father, ran the Mobil Gas Station in Pickstown. It was at this time that Jim met a young lady with car trouble by the name of Rita Holmberg. Jim and Rita were united in marriage on July 22, 1961, in Bristow, Nebraska. After their marriage they remained in Pickstown for three years before moving to Lake Andes, where he worked for an Auto Supply Store. They then moved to Vermillion where Jim worked as a material clerk for Clay Union Electric. In 1968, they moved to Wall where Jim continued as a work order clerk for West River Electric. He later took an accounting position with West River Electric where he continued until retiring in 1998.
During his time in Wall he was a member of the Wall Volunteer Fire Department, earning Fireman of the Year in 1981. As a young man, he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. Later in life, he enjoyed woodworking, riding motorcycles, and cleaning and polishing his vehicles.
Survivors include his wife Rita of Rapid City; one son Lyle Haney and his wife Robin of Burke; one daughter Tammy Huether and her husband Scott of Interior; two grandchildren Cody and Dylan Huether; two step-grandchildren Torrey and Trevor Larson; three step-great-grandchildren Allura, Waylon, and Graham; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by a stillborn son Wayne; his parents; and his mother and father-in-law, Otto and Frances Holmberg.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 14, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Russell Masartis officiating.
Interment will be at the Wall Cemetery.
