JoAnn Hynes

JoAnn Hynes, age 90, of Rapid City, South Dakota, died on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at her home in Rapid City surrounded by loved ones.

Dolores JoAnn Hynes was born January 25, 1933, in Quinn, South Dakota to Roy and Violet (Hildebrandt) Johnson. She enjoyed singing, dancing, playing the piano, and gardening. JoAnn loved the purple Iris and adorned her flower garden and home with them. She graduated from Quinn High School where she attended all 12 years of her education. She had a beautiful voice and sang at many school functions.

JoAnn obtained her Teaching Certificate at Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish. She taught for one year in a country, one-room schoolhouse south of Quinn, which included first through eighth grades. One of her favorite and most rewarding jobs was working alongside Dr. Ole Hvam at the Quinn Hospital. She spent most of her working years as a bookkeeper and/or office manager for several local businesses.

JoAnn married John Hynes on November 3, 1951 in Rapid City, and to this union they were blessed with three beautiful daughters: Becky, Vicky, and Brenda. Joining the family later was a granddaughter, Christy, who was the apple of her eye and much loved son-in-law, Paul Ortman. Paul nicknamed her Da Mil, a name that she is lovingly now referred to by Paul and her family!

JoAnn's greatest joy and blessing in life was God's gift of motherhood and becoming a grandmother. Family was everything to her. She was grateful for being raised by a family where hard work, honesty, and loving the Lord were the basic goals in life. JoAnn was baptized a member of the Quinn Methodist Church. Later in life, John and JoAnn moved to Quinn. She often stood in as an alternate minister. She shared her creative talents with church members by creating original bulletins and playing the piano for church services. She remained a member until the Quinn Methodist Church closed its doors in 1992.

Survivors include three daughters: Rebecca "Becky" Langdeau of Rapid City, Victoria "Vicky" Hynes of The Colony Texas; and Brenda (Paul) Ortman of Loudon, TN; granddaughter Christy Langdeau of Gilbert, AZ; sister Gloria Whitney of Idaho Falls, ID; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John on April 7, 2010; her parents LeRoy and Violet Johnson; and two brothers Myron and Curt Johnson.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Rapid City.
