Larry D. Foss, age 74

Larry Dean Foss

Larry D. Foss, age 74, of Lemmon, S.D., passed away with his family at his side on Monday, December 12, 2016 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D., after a courageous three-year battle with lung cancer.

Larry was born on September 9, 1942 in Hettinger, North Dakota to Kenneth and Elsie (Anderson) Foss. He grew up southwest of White Butte, South Dakota, attended grade school at Liberty School and high school in Lemmon, graduating in 1960.    He attended college in Rapid City, SD and Bozeman, Montana. On January 7, 1963, he entered the US Air Force and was honorably (medically) discharged on January 16, 1964. After being discharged from the Air Force, he worked for Lemmon Construction. In 1966, following the death of his father, Larry began farming and ranching with his brother, Gary. Larry met Marlys Klein on December 29, 1966, and they were married on September 3, 1967, in Lemmon, SD. To this union four children were born: Kalon, Kimberly, Kevin and Kristi.

In his spare time, Larry enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble with Facebook

friends, Sudoku and crossword puzzles. He and Marlys enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles together. There was always a puzzle going year round. In earlier years, he enjoyed prairie dog hunting and reloading his own and many friends ammunition. There were always lots of grandkids at Grandma and "Papa’s" house. He took a great interest in his kids and grandkids in and out of school activities.
Over the years, Larry served on many boards and committees, including the Lemmon School Board for 17 years, the FSA Committee for 10 years, and the North Grand Water User District and was the current Liberty Township Treasurer, a position he'd held for over 40 years.

In January of 2014 when his health began to fail, he and Marlys moved into a "little house" in Lemmon. They sold their land to their sons in October of 2015, but still operated their rented land.

No matter how challenging the last years were, Larry always had a positive outlook. Throughout his illness he was always hopeful and optimistic and still kept his sense of humor.

Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife of 49 years, Marlys; two sons, Kalon (Misty) Foss and Kevin (Christy) Foss, all of Lemmon; two daughters, Kimberly Lyon, Pierre, and Kristi Foss, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister, Connie (Maris) Williams, Aberdeen, SD and mother-in-law, Violet Klein, Lemmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gary Foss, an infant sister, grandson, Ayden
Foss-McLeod, and father-in-law, Ben Klein.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM MT Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon with Pastor Charlotte Kvale, officiating.  A private family burial will be held at Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon with full military honors afforded by the Brattvet-Green American Legion Post #66 of Lemmon.
