Larry Volmer

Larry Volmer 75, Owanka, S.D., passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, at home, surrounded by family, after a five-year battle of lung cancer.
     Larry Dean Volmer was born at New Underwood,  Dec. 23, 1942, to Lawrence and Blanche (Coomes) Volmer. They brought him home to the farm and ranch at Owanka, and he lived there all of his life. He attended grade school at the Fuller, Hillside, and Harmony School.  He started high school at New Underwood in the fall of 1957. There he met his friend for life. Larry and Faye (Olson) Volmer were married in 1960 at Sibley, Iowa. Randy and Rodney soon joined them and their family was complete. Larry and Faye took over the ranch in 1962, when his parents moved to Rapid City.
    Larry spent time serving on many boards; including New Underwood School Board, New Underwood Fire Board, Owanka Township Board, Owanka Rural Water Association, Pennington County ASC & FHA – Weed & Pest – and Road Boards. He was also a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers and R-Calf.
     He enjoyed trips to Alaska and Australia with friends and having coffee with the fellows at Harry’s.
     Besides his wife; he is survived by two sons, Randy and wife, Sherry and Rodney and wife, Vicki all of Owanka; five grandchildren carry on the legacy, Candy (Brant) Wilcox, Gillette, Wyo., Clay (Carrie) Volmer, Milsap, Texas, Kyle (Kristi) Volmer, Owanka, Zane (Shelly) Volmer, Owanka, Wyatt (Stephanie) Volmer, Wall; eight great-grandchildren survive also, Nicole Volmer, Larry Gavin Wilcox, Orrin Volmer, Carson Volmer, Natalie Volmer, William Volmer, Tanner Volmer, Makaylah Anne Volmer; six stepgrea-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Jobgen; brother-in-law, Dale (Dorothy) Olson; nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
     He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; brother-in-law, Donald Jobgen; sister-in-law, Janet Harwood; and great grandson, Jay J. Volmer.
     A memorial has been established to the New Underwood Fire Department.
     Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
     Funeral services are Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the New Underwood School Gymmasium with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.  
    Burial will follow at the New Underwood Cemetery.
