Norma E. Simon, age 99

Norma E. Simon

Norma E. Simon, Wicksville, S.D.,  passed away Sept. 15, 2016, at Hospice of the Hills at the age of 99.
She was born Jan. 27, 1917, to Frank and Clara (Deering) Carter in Cheyenne, Wyo. She spent her early years in LaGrange, Wyo., later moving to the Elm Springs/Dalzell, area where she completed elementary school. The family eventually relocated to Owanka, where she graduated from high school in 1936.
Norma worked as a telephone operator until she married Elmer Simon in September 1940. They began their life together on Elmer's parents' farm/ranch near Wicksville which they eventually purchased. They spent the next 69 years there raising a family, making a living and enjoying life together until Elmer's death in 2010. Norma was able to continue living in her home on the farm until December 2015 when a broken hip made it necessary for her to reside in the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood for five months. In June, she moved to Rose Manor in Rapid City where she resided until shortly before her death.
Norma devoted her life to helping Elmer with the farm, raising her children, caring for her elderly mother, enjoying her grandchildren and cooking fabulous meals. She was especially known for her delicious pies. Norma enjoyed reading, playing cards, crocheting, cooking, and shopping. She had completed all her Christmas shopping this past year shortly before she broke her hip.
Norma was very active in the Owanka community. She was the secretary/treasurer for the Lakeside Cemetery for many years. She was also an active member of the Wicksville Workers' Club. She received the Catalyst Club Good Neighbor Award in 2005. She always put others before herself.
Grateful for having Norma in their lives are children, Monte (Connie) Simon, Owanka, Beverly Douglas, Omaha, Neb., and Connie (Bob) Sukut, Rapid City; grandchildren, Nick Simon, Lorinda (John) Covell, Eric (Jessica) Douglas, all of Omaha; Quentin Sukut, Edmond, Okla.; Carlie (Ryan) Berger, Rapid City; and Erin Simon; great-grandchildren, Ina and Nova Sukut, Kaylee and Caitlyn Douglas, Chaos, Havoc and Frenzy Covell, Macie and Mason Berger, Abbie and Bridget Simon; and special family, Sue Simon, Larry Douglas and Rui Sukut.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer, and son, Mickey Simon.
Memorial services were Sept. 24, 2016 at the Wicksville Community Church.
