Sadie Rae Singleton
Sadie Rae Singleton, age 82, of Philip, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Sadie Rae Singleton was born March 17, 1941, in Philip, South Dakota to Anton S. and Mary Jane (Fitch) Hovland. She was named “Sadie Rae” after her aunt and uncle Raymond and Sadie Edwards as they could not have children. Sadie grew up near Nowlin for a couple years with Grandma Hovland. Her family then moved to Omaha, Nebraska where her father worked as a carpenter. When she was five years old, they then moved to their permanent home east of Milesville, South Dakota. It was Sadie’s home until she was united in marriage to Harry Wood in 1962.
Sadie attended a rural school for several years where she and her brother were the only students. She then attended Pierre High School while living with several families. She then moved to Vermillion for one year of nursing school and later went to Spearfish for summer school for teaching. Sadie taught at the Carr School by the Cheyenne River for a few years until teaching elementary students at the Philip School until 1963.
Her husband Harry was a civil engineer, so they travelled a lot with his job including living in various towns in South Dakota, Colorado, and Pennsylvania.
Sadie was united in marriage to Thomas T. Singleton, and they resided in Casa Grande, Arizona, until Thomas' death on May 14, 1994. She then moved to Philip where she continued to reside until her death.
Survivors include two sons Blaine and Gary Wood; daughter Tawnya Kincheloe; grandchildren: Rayde, Dylan, and Reese Wilson and Hadley and Bryson Nipps; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Harry and Thomas; parents; and brothers Gary and Doug Hovland.
Memorial services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Rush Funeral Home in Philip.
Interment followed at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
