Scott Dowling, age 61

Scott Dowling

Scott Dowling, age 61, of Draper, S.D., died Monday, April 3, 2017, at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital.

Scott was born on November 1, 1955, in Pierre to Louis and June Dowling. Scott married Janet Anderson on December 27, 1996 and they resided in Draper. They have four children.

Scott was raised on a small grain and livestock farm north of Draper. He attended Draper Public School for 12 years graduating in 1974. Scott’s only real passion in life was to farm and ranch. When Scott was nine or 10 years old he raised chickens and bum lambs to sell on market. From those sales he was able to purchase his first four head of cattle at auction at the age of 12. When he was in the fifth grade his parents gave him his first John Deere tractor for Christmas and he worked on his parent’s farm helping put up hay and farming. By 1973 his cow herd was up to nine head. In his junior year of high school he signed his first note at the Draper bank with his brother, Tracy, and purchased another 50 head of cattle. After graduation from high school Scott couldn’t wait to get started custom farming for neighbors and rented all the land they could for many years, purchasing his first tract of land of 318 acres in 1980. When his parents retired, Scott and his brother took over the farm. They continued to farm and ranch until December 2012, when Scott and his wife bought Tracy out and continued in the farming sector.

Scott was a member of Draper United Methodist Church. Scott’s passion was farming, but his love for his family was most important. Scott also enjoyed visiting with his friends on many topics and probably farming was at the top of that list.
He was preceded in death by his dad Louis, mother June, and an infant brother Garry.

Survivors include his wife Janet, a son Skyler (Brittany) of Pierre; two daughters, Tara Meyer (Zachary) of Mounds View, Minn., Teddi Dowling and special friend Michael Goergen of Fargo, N.D.; a step-son Jason Anderson (Jessica) of Cary, N.C.; two special little grandsons, Jackson and Lincoln; two brothers both of Draper, Terry and Tracy and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m., Friday, April 7, at the Draper Auditorium with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Isburg Funeral Chapel.
