Vern John Petersen

Funeral Services for Vern Petersen age 14 of Dupree, SD were held Monday, December 9, 2019 at the Dupree School New Gym in Dupree, SD. Shannon Hinrichs  officiated. Burial was in the Dupree Cemetery in Dupree, SD under direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD.  Vern Petersen passed away on December 2, 2019 at Eagle Butte Hospital in Eagle Butte, SD.

Vern was born in Pierre, SD on December 31, 2004. He came into the lives of the Howard and Lila Petersen family at the age of 3.

Vern enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and just playing with others outside. He liked to listen to music especially the older music and Luke Bryan. He later discovered LEGO League which he loved and did as long as he was able to. LEGO allowed him to be a leader and the younger children looked up to him for his patience. The last year he discovered a new passion, sports, he loved running and decided to participate in cross country and track, which he loved to do.

He is survived by adoptive father and mother Howard and Lila Petersen, brothers Elmer, Ernie, Dwayne Petersen all of Wyoming; sisters Kate (Nathan) Matthews, Marion, Shawneequa and Stevie of Dupree; Nephews and Nieces, Makaysa and Shyanna Lien, Kolby Petersen, Cashton Rathbun, Shylo, Karie, Heather and Gavin Matthews, and Tanzlei Petersen; a grandmother, Virginia Till and many aunts and uncles.

He is also survived by many family members of the Mexican and Egna families.

Casket bearers were Dwayne Petersen, Kate Matthews, Nathan Matthews, Kolby Petersen, Carlie Rathbun, Carla Stambach. Honorary Casket bearers all classmates, teammates, teachers, staff, family,  and friends.
