June Shinabarger, 69, of Bison, SD, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at West River Health Services in Hettinger, ND.
June's funeral will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 10 a.m. at Grace Bible Fellowship Church in Bison, SD, officiated by Pastor Phil Hahn. Burial to follow at Bison Cemetery.
June Marie (Brockel) Shinabarger was born May 30, 1957 in Sturgis, SD. She is the daughter of Lester and Ramona Brockel of Bison. While growing up on the family farm, she attended the one-room country school of Scotch Cap, two miles west of the farm, through the sixth grade. June graduated from Bison High School in 1975. She attended college for a short time at SDSU in Brookings.
June began dating Dale Shinabarger while he was stationed at Minot Air Force Base in Minot, ND. They married on August 11, 1977 at the Presbyterian Church in Bison. In 1980, she gave birth to their one and only child, a son, Terry.
Her work history was diverse through the years as the family moved from North Dakota to Wyoming to Missouri and finally retired back in Bison, SD in 2014. June’s primary work was in banking during their time in North Dakota and Missouri. Then as a fleet service worker for Trans World Airlines / American Airlines. In 2011, she founded a volunteer-run thrift store as an outreach of her local church in Missouri, which is still in operation today. However, her most important job through the years was being a mom!
June’s hobbies included crocheting, sewing, collecting coins, gardening, reading, scrapbooking, and playing the piano. One of her greatest talents was planning, preparing, and serving meals for school activities, fundraisers, church dinners, and holidays. She loved on people and businesses with her talent in the kitchen, especially at Christmas! To relax, she loved time outside enjoying her flowers and a good conversation on the front porch. In recent years she really enjoyed her kitties, sudoko, jigsaw puzzles, and long phone conversations with those she loved.
June is survived by her husband, Dale Shinabarger, their son Terry and his wife Sarah Shinabarger (their children; Ethney, Elim, and Eviannah), her mother, Ramona Brockel, and brother, Thomas Brockel, all of Bison, SD. She is preceded in death by her father, Lester Brockel, in 2012.
